Homeopathy
Homeopathy offers an extensive range of substances and potencies; it requires a detailed knowledge of prescribing. Remedy selection is focused on the symptom picture and constitution of each individual patient. Both physical and mental ailments respond well to a correctly selected remedy. I have found homeopathic remedies particularly useful when working with deep emotional issues such as grief and anger, or difficult ailments that are unresponsive to other therapies. Homoeopathics are very safe and do not interfere with other medications.
Homeopathic theory was developed by the German doctor Samuel Hahnumann and is based on the principles of Like Cures Like and The Minimum Dose. Dr. Hahnumann began his inquiry into the potential action of low-dose remedies in 1784 whilst translating William Cullen’s A Treatise on the Material Medica from English into German. During the translation, Dr. Hahnemann noted that Cinchona bark (quinine) was listed as both curing the symptoms of malaria in a low dose and causing symptoms like malaria in a high dose. Initially, Dr Hahnemann began experimenting on himself and then groups of healthy controls with a series of low doses of quinine and was able to produce symptoms like malaria. The experiment was repeated with patients suffering from malaria and resulted in a resolution of their symptoms. Over the next 40 years, Dr. Hahnemann researched over 2000 substances from plant, animal and mineral sources. To render the substances safe, Dr. Hahnemann employed a method of dilution and succussion (shaking), which he later referred to as the Minimum Dose. Whilst recording the effects of different substances. Dr. Hahnemann also noted different responses associated with different levels of dilution and succussion. Dr Hahnemann believed this was due to the vital/life force being more able to respond to a dose that did not overwhelm it. Consequently, the type and location of the symptoms, the strength of the patient and the length and intensity of symptoms are taken into consideration when selecting the type and dose of a homeopathic remedy.
Anthroposophic medicine was developed by Rudolf Steiner and extends the theory of homeopathy and the minimum dose to include the use of biodynamically produced materials, esoteric plant studies, understanding of the three and fourfold human being and working with the balance between cosmic and earthly impulses.
